How the 48-Team FIFA World Cup 2026 Format Works
The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams, 12 groups, and 104 matches. Here's exactly how the new format works, from group stage to the final.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first in tournament history to feature 48 teams, expanding from the 32-team format used between 1998 and 2022. The new format means more matches, more teams, and a longer tournament.
## Group Stage
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four teams each, labeled A through L. Within each group, every team plays the other three once, with three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage.
## Round of 32
The round of 32 is the new stage introduced with the 48-team format. 32 teams play 16 matches over four days, with the winners advancing to the round of 16. The bracket is set based on group stage performance, with the group winners facing third-placed teams in the round of 32.
## Knockout Rounds
From the round of 16 onwards, the tournament follows a traditional single-elimination format. The round of 16 produces eight teams, the quarter-finals four, the semi-finals two, and the final one champion. A third-place match is played between the two semi-final losers.
## Total Matches
The 2026 World Cup will feature 104 matches in total, up from 64 in 2022. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026, a 39-day span. The opening match is at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and the final is at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
## Hosts and Venues
The tournament is hosted across 16 cities in three countries: 11 in the United States, 2 in Canada, and 3 in Mexico. Each venue group has been allocated a set of matches based on capacity and infrastructure.
## Why 48 Teams?
FIFA's expansion to 48 teams was approved in 2017 and is part of the organization's strategy to grow the game globally. The expansion means more nations qualify directly, including several that have never appeared at a World Cup. It also generates more revenue through broadcast rights and sponsorship.
